Duane Betts and Devon Allman, sons of rock legends Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman, performed at the 2017 Peach Festival Tribute to Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman in Scranton, Pennsylvania this past weekend. The tribute was organized by Allman Brother keyboardist, Chuck Leavell, who has been touring with the Rolling Stones for the past 30+ years. The lineup for the tribute included members and alumni of both the Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman bands- Oteil Burbridge, Jaimoe, Marc Quinones, Jack Pearson, Bruce Katz, Scott Sharrard, Peter Levin Warren Haynes, and Chuck Leavell. But the highlight was the musical lineage of the founding ABB members. Here is a special treat of Chuck jamming on "Losing Hand" by his musical hero Ray Charles. Chuck began his music career as a tagalong kid brother on his older sister’s date to a Ray Charles gig in Tuscaloosa in 1965. “I was 13 and my parents had something else going on that night,” Leavell recalled to Atlanta magazine this week from his 2500-acre tree farm in Macon. “So they said, ‘Why don’t you take Chuck with you?’ She graciously said yes. I was already playing music, learning piano and guitar. I was very interested in music. But I had never seen anything that powerful. I mean, Ray Charles is Ray Charles but then he had [David] Fathead Newman on sax, the Raelettes were singing. The band was just so tight. I walked away that night knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my life. …

Chuck Leavell will be joining The Rolling Stones on their "No Filter" European Tour in the Fall. The Stones will play thirteen shows across Europe in September and October. Chuck has appeared on every Stones recording and tour since joining the 'World's Greatest Rock Band' in 1981. As the keyboardist for the Stones, Chuck is filling the shoes of rock's greatest keyboardists, including founding Rolling Stones member Ian Stewart and the late Nicky Hopkins and Billy Preston. Along with his role as the group's sole keyboardist, Chuck also serves as the group's musical director- coordinating each night's set list. This year's Peach Festival will honor the musical legacies of the late Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks with a special tribute set led by Chuck Leavell serving as musical director. Leavell will bring together former Allman Brothers Band members and close Allman/Trucks associates like Jaimoe, Oteil Burbridge, Marc Quinones, Duane Trucks, Devon Allman, Jack Pearson, Marcus King, Bruce Katz, Lamar Williams Jr., Pat Bergeson, Allman’s former musical director Scott Sharrard, Pete Levin, Berry Oakley Jr., Vaylor Trucks and many more. Gregg Allman was not only a friend and brother, but he was a strong inspiration to me very early on in my career. I used to go see the Allman Joys at the Fort Brandon Armory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama when I was a young aspiring musician of 13 and 14 years old. He mesmerized me with his talent…that incredible voice, his understated yet strong stage presence. As he developed as an artist and songwriter, I continued to follow his career…and when the Allman Brothers Band was formed, I thought…”Now they have figured it out…” That first record was ground-breaking and a new style of music, Southern Rock, was born. "Jessica" Piano Lesson Here's a rare version of Dickey Betts and Chuck Leavell performing "Jessica". This is not the Allman Brothers. After the ABB split in 1976 Chuck Leavell founded the band Sea Level which toured and recorded until 1981. This video is post-Sea Level when Dickey Betts and Chuck Leavell got back together and played in a couple of different band configurations. In 1982, Chuck began touring with the Stones. Dickey Betts continued touring with his own band. Chuck's piano solo on the original recording of "Jessica" off the "Brothers and Sisters" album earned "Jessica" a spot 0n the top 10 rock piano songs list of all time.
