Rory Stuart a critically acclaimed jazz guitarist and composer, who designed the rhythm curriculum at New School University, teaches lessons in rhythm to players on all instruments (he has recently been giving private lessons to 3 world-renowned pianists). Described as “perhaps the most innovative straight-ahead guitarist to emerge in years” (Jazz Times), Rory has led acclaimed groups, and performed with a wide range of jazz legends, the list of names is a Who’s Who of jazz. He has performed and taught in countries around the world, and across the United States. Rory has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, named as one of the greatest living guitarists (“The Great Jazz Guitarists” by Scott Yanow), received New School’s top award for Teaching Excellence and is a Fulbright Scholar. A list of his former students reads like a “Who’s Who” of rising young jazz stars.
From phrasing and grooves in Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, swing, and funk, to rhythmic development, cross-rhythms, odd meters, changing meters, rhythmic superimposition and subdivision, feel modulation and metric modulation, Rory can help musicians at all levels and on all instruments with rhythm.
