Leon Russell is currently ranked 6th in our poll of The Greatest Rock Piano Players. Who is your favorite keyboard player? Favorite song?Leon Russell’s work is prolific throughout rock. As a studio musician with Phil Spector’s Wrecking crew he recorded with early rock pioneers including the Byrds, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Ronettes, and Darlene Love. In 1969-70 Leon toured with Delaney & Bonnie and then went on to touring with Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Of Leon’s recordings, our favorite is “Leon Russell and Friends, the Homewood Sessions” recorded in 1970.
