“She Talks To Angels” piano lesson
“She Talks to Angels” is a beautiful rock ballad. Blues, soul, and gospel all wrapped up into one. The Black Crowes recorded two versions of this song for their album Shake Your Money Maker. The first version, released in 1990, begins with an acoustic guitar intro and on the second version, released in 1998, Chuck Leavell provides the intro and background fills on piano. This lesser known recording has some of Chuck’s must beautiful keyboard playing. Pure, poignant, gospel piano that matches Chris Robinson’s dark vocals and lyrics. This is a great song to work on your gospel piano playing. It uses a I, IV,V gospel inspired progression, and employs the technique of moving between the root and its fourth on each chord change. Resolving from the IV chord to the I chord is a cornerstone of gospel playing. The lesson arrangement also includes some tasty syncopated 16th-note phrasings and the improvisation works with one of Chuck’s go-to techniques where he moves through pentatonic scales beginning and/or ending each phrase on a dyad of the scale.
After years of on and off spats between brothers Chris and Rich Robinson they are reuniting in 2020 to celebrate the anniversary of their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker. It’s nice to see that the music is prevailing.
