A tale of two Capricorn Studios piano players

In the spirit of the Capricorn studio revival this month we are featuring two Capricorn recordings and the piano players behind these great recordings. "Jessica" was recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia and released in 1973. “Jessica” has proven to be one of Capricorn’s pivotal recordings. The piano solo on "Jessica" was performed by Chuck Leavell; a piano solo that pioneered improvisational rock piano. "Jessica" is this week's featured irocku piano lesson. Shawn Pfaffman – Southern Jazz Pianist, Composer, Teacher

IROCKU is honored to welcome Shawn Pfaffman to our team of writers and instructors. Shawn is a soulful Jazz and Blues Pianist from Jacksonville, FL. His signature style, "Southern Jazz" is a flavorful gumbo loaded with Blues, Soul, Gospel and Funk. He was a Semi-Finalist at the 2017 International Blues Challenge. He has performed throughout the world as a solo artist, band leader and sideman. Shawn has recorded 6 solo albums including his latest release, "Southern Jazz Piano". His piano and Hammond B3 playing has been recorded in studios for artists in genres including: Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-hop, Jazz, Blues, and Reggae. Joe Cocker “Feelin’ Alright”- with Mark Alexander on Piano

Here’s a video of Joe Cocker singing Dave Mason’s Traffic classic, “Feelin Alright”. The piano intro to this song is one of rock’s most recognized piano licks, originally played by Artie Butler on Joe Cocker’s debut album With a Little Help from My Friends. This “Feelin Alright” video features session and stage keyboardist, Mark Alexander. Joe Cocker was known for surrounding himself with the top musicians in the music industry. Guitar greats Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton all made their way into a Cocker session. Saxophone phenom, Bobby Keys notoriously known for his work with the Rolling Stones shared his chops on the “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” (1970) live and “Jamaica Say You Will” (1975) albums.
